Monarchs’ defense delivers against Woodland

The Mark Morris boys basketball team bides its time before taking the court prior to a game earlier this season. On Wednesday the Monarchs defeated Woodland and picked up a 55-24 league victory. — Skyler Smith for Blast Zone Media

The Monarchs’ defense was a bit under the weather in a 2A Greater St. Helens League matchup, Wednesday, at Woodland, but that didn’t matter much because good defense is like chicken noodle soup for teams in need. That is to say, whatever a team needs, a slow boiled defense is the best delivery device to make everyone feel better in the end.

Well, everyone except the other team.

Such was the case for the Mark Morris boys basketball team when it worked over the Beavers like a dose of Grandpa’s cough syrup in a 55-24 victory at The Den.

The Monarchs allowed no more than seven points in any quarter, and held Woodland to a low of five points in the second frame. Behind that defensive effort, Mark Morris enjoyed a 22–11 lead at halftime much like a saltine cracker hits a tummy that’s got the woozies — It’s not great, but it’s something that probably won’t make you puke.

“We held them to single digits in every quarter defensively and that's obviously a pretty good recipe to win a basketball game,” MM coach Ken Kelly said.
