Weeks leads Toledo to win at Wahkiakum

You know what they say, old habits die hard. Which is an unattributed fact that was once again proven true Monday night when the Toledo and Wahkiakum boys basketball teams sought each other out for a non-league scrap late in the regular season.

The visitings Riverhawks escaped Cathlamet with a 60-56 victory, but it took some reconfiguring and a new addition to get out of Wahkiakum County with the win.

Which reminds me — the other thing people say is that Wahkiakum is a tough place to play.

“Great game. That’s a hard place to play,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “We purposefully scheduled this game late to hopefully prepare us for Districts.”

Just last year the matchup would have been a league affair and mandated on the schedule twice per season. But these days, with the Mules living in the 1B Columbia Valley League, while the Riverhawks remain in the Central 2B League, it took some special work behind the scenes to find a date and location that would work.

Luckily, both head coaches are also the athletic directors for their schools, so they managed to find a way to work it out.
