Kelso gets on the board against Battle Ground

The Hilanders picked up their first win of the season this week and will be looking to keep that newfound momentum going into next weeks’ cross-river matchup with R.A. Long.

After taking a figurative right-cross to the chin from Union early in the week, Kelso responded with a 65-43 win, Thursday, at home over Battle Ground in 3A/4A Greater St. Helens League boys basketball play.

The Scots built up their advantage ever so slowly, turning a four point edge after one quarter of play into a 37-29 lead at halftime. And then after playing to a draw in the third quarter, Kelso finally broke through with an 18-4 rally in the fourth quarter to put their first victory on ice.

The Hilanders are hoping that in a few months they’ll be able to look back at the ups and downs of this as an allegory for their season’s trajectory.

It’s just a matter of how high they can get that line graph to go.

“It’s been not an ideal start, but they certainly responded well and led from start to finish,” Kelso coach Joe Kinch said.

After five straight losses, it was certainly an invigorating tonic akin to grandpappy’s proprietary hot toddy in what had otherwise been a cold hearted start to the winter season. And Bryar Iddings was the high octane fuel that sparked the Scots, posting 23 points with a trio of 3-pointers and five assists to his teammates.
