Slow starts hurt Kelso in Highway 6 series
The Kelso girls basketball team didn’t get any late gifts last week as they endured a pair of losses at a holiday hoops happening in the middle of the sleepy fields of Adna hay country. Back-to-back losses to Montesano and the host Pirates put a wrinkled wrap on the calendar year for the Lassies.
Kelso fell 53-44 to Montesano on Saturday, with Bregan Ruhland scoring a team-high 14 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Ava Schrader led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Makena Blancas and Evanjillie Dalan each added 10 points, while Dalan made it a double-double with 15 rebounds
“In our last two games against Adna and Montesano, we came out flat in the first quarters, putting ourselves in a position where we had to play from behind,” Kelso coach Andrew Johnson said.
