Kelso wins team title at Mat Classic XXXVI

The Kelso girls didn’t have any individual champions at Mat Classic XXXVI last weekend at the Tacoma Dome, but they did enough to capture their first-ever team championship. That’s what a team can do when it brings 17 wrestlers to the state tournament and nearly everyone puts points on the board.

The Lassies held a large lead over Peninsula in the team title chase after one day of action, but saw that gap slowly dwindle over the course of Friday’s action. By the time the last of Kelso’s wrestlers had earned their medal the Seahawks trailed by just 17.5 points with three championship matches left to wrestle. That meant Peninsula could capture the team title with three consecutive pins down the stretch. And while all three Seahawks captured solo State championships, they did not notch enough pins to take the team trophy, too.

“You go win a State title and you bring, you know, 17 girls and 16 of them score points – it was the whole team effort that made this happen,” Kelso coach Bob Freund said. “I'm really proud of these girls. They've won pretty much everything all year, and it would be nice to walk out of here with higher placings and a couple state champions, but that doesn't always define everything.”

Freund was recently named 3A GSHL Coach of the Year in a vote by the league’s coaches. Meanwhile, Kelso’s Leah Wallway was voted 3A GSHL Wrestler of the Year. (Editor's Note: See the full All-League list at the bottom of this section.)
