The Hilanders were pitch perfect Thursday in an 8-0 win over Evergreen. Karsyn Ross led Kelso to the 3A Greater St. Helens League victory with four goals on the night at Schroeder Field.
Ross opened the scoring in the 7th minute on an assist from Mikalah Boucher. She then followed up with an unassisted score in the 15th minute before taking a pass from Lilly Hostetter one minute later and turning it into another goal.
With a hat trick for Ross in hand, Kelso went to the intermission holding a 3-0 lead and came up with a plan to get some other players involved in the second half.
Hostetter got things going again in the 59th minute with an unassisted score, and four minutes later Brooklynn Verhei knocked in an unassisted goal of her own. Just four minutes after that Maya Swanson sent a penalty kick into the back of the net to give the Hilanders a six goal advantage.
In the 72nd minute Ross made it an official haul when she took a pass from Verhei and sent it screaming past the pipes. Karsyn Hall capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 78th minute.
Makenna Fitzpatrick posted a pair of savs to keep the shutout intact for Kelso.
Kelso coach Kyle Tatro listed Sydnie Walters as the defensive standout of the match for the Hilanders.
“Her leadership (and) composure helped keep the team focused,” Tatro said.
Meanwhile, Evergreen Shakia Stanciell notched eight saves on a busy night in the goal.
Kelso (7-2-1, 2-1 league) will hit the road to play at Heritage on Monday at 7 p.m.
Lumberjills shut out at Ridgefield
The R.A. Long girls soccer team was unable to keep the good times rolling, Thursday, in a 3-0 loss at Ridgerild in 2A GSHL action.
The Spudders scored all three goals in the first half to put the Jills in a hole they weren’t even able to begin digging out of. Ridgefield notched its first score on a corner kick by Ellie Wilson, then added a goal on a direct kick by Watson all within the first 20 minutes. The Spuds found the net a third time on a quick run up the pitch by Alyssa Carney during first half stoppage time..
“They were high energy and very clinical,” RAL Taylor Wallace said.
But while the Lumberjills offense was stagnant on the night, the defense was able to find its footing after the intermission.
“Our girls did a great job rising to the occasion and getting the second half shutout,” Wallace noted.
R.A. Long (6-2, 4-2 league) will have another tough test when it hosts Columbia River, Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
Rockets rolled late by White Salmon
Castle Rock fell on the road at Columbia-White Salmon by a score of 4-1 in 1A Trico League girls soccer play, Thursday.
The Rockets managed to take a scoreless draw into the intermission and then turned around and took a 1-0 lead early in the second half. That score came off the boot of Sarah Johnson within the several minutes of play resuming.
Castle Rock coach Ashley Fulton noted goalkeeper Ava Vaughan had her best game of the season during her first year wearing the mittens. But the good times were not meant to last for a team playing with just 11 players suited up.
“The strain of not having any subs and playing under for a bit caught up,” Fulton said. “As good as we did battling every beautiful corner our opponent sent our way they finally gained momentum and were able to overtake us.”
Castle Rock (0-5-1, 0-4-1 league) will host Kalama on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
‘Nooks knocked off by King’s Way

The Knight’s took a 3-0 lead in the first half and kept pouring it on until the final whistle.
Aubree Hutchinson was a bright spot for the Chinooks on a chaotic night, posting 10 saves in the loss.
