YAKIMA – The Toledo Riverhawks have never blinked in the face of adversity. Not even once. That doesn’t mean they always win, but there has never been a moment that the Cheese Town Nine have thought they were going to lose.
And all of that righteous belief, mixed with a whole bunch of timely hitting and a right-arm on the Riverhawks’ starting pitcher that just won’t stop, earned Toledo a third place trophy in the 2B State Tournament.
Toledo had to play three games on Saturday, May 24, at the Gateway Sports Complex, in order to snag the bronze trophy. And it was a rough start for the Riverhawks, who rolled into the semifinals only to be turned away 11-1 by Freeman. But Toledo responded with a 10-8 win over Liberty, and then came out on top 17-13 in a District IV cage fight with Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in the evening affair.
“This team just doesn’t quit,” Toledo head coach Jeff Davis said. “We might make some errors. We might have some walks. But we never give up. I don’t think they even know how.”
