Monarchs motor over Jacks and Jills in slippery Civil War

The season’s first Civil War matchup between the R.A. Long and Mark Morris track and field teams took place on the wrong side of spring break for any athlete who requires pristine conditions to excel. But for those runners, jumpers and throwers who weren’t afraid to get wet, the cross-town rivalry meet provided ample opportunity for competitors to impress simply by gritting their teeth and leaning into the wind.

The meet even included the ever-popular throwers relays, where the strong boys and girls got to take their turn feeling the wind in their hair while the crowd roared down the home stretch.

The Monarchs won both of the team competitions, defeating the Lumberjacks by a score of 115-22, and defeating the Lumberjills, 76-55. But those results didn’t dampen first-year R.A. Long head coach Tiffany Jean-Pierre’s perspective on the inclement encounter.

“Despite the uncooperative weather, (our) track and field team put up a strong fight against the Mark Morris Monarchs,” Jean-Pierre said. “An outstanding number of athletes walked away with season records and personal records, showcasing their determination and hard work.”
