Less than a fortnight after the Naselle football roughed up Wahkiakum to bring home the Battle of KM Mountain trophy, the Comets volleyball team made sure bragging rights remained west of the pass with a three-set win over the Mules in 1B volleyball action. The visitors left Cathlamet with straight set wins of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-17.
“Naselle keeps the ball off of the floor and in play consistently and we just made too many errors to have the score fall our way,” Wahkiakum coach Kayli Hurley said.
Sophia Colombo led the Comets with a dozen digs and Sadie Kilponen turned in 10 more athletic first touches. Brooke Davis added nine digs to go with four kills, and Mylee Dunagan registered five blocks in the win.
Offensively, Haylee Rose led Naselle with seven kills and Kaitlyn Stennerson added five kills. Jesse Smith dished out a team-high 13 assists for the Comets.
As for Wahkiakum, Helen Lewis and Annelise Vik finished with three kills each. Sam Delacruz finished with 11 assists, while Amy Horman had six digs to go with two aces.
“Jessie Lafever had 11 digs and a consistent and focused serve receive match tonight,” Hurley added. “And most importantly, our bench is the backbone of our team and this week, they were on fire with positivity and energy.
Wahkiakum (5-2) will head to Willapa Valley on Monday for another non-league match.
Naselle (4-4, 1-0 league) will play at Ocosta on Thursday.
