If there’s one proven way to help get over a disappointment, it’s to get back up and try it again as soon as possible. You might wind up disappointed again, but heck, at least you’ll have forgotten about that other letdown.
For R.A. Long volleyball, though, the payoff was much more satisfying when they got back on the horse and rode to a three-set win over Black Hills in non-league play, Wednesday, at The Lumberdome by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-14
That sweep set victory came just 24-hours after the Lumberjills were dispatched by their rivals from the north side of Lake Sacajawea in the season’s first Civil War meeting.
“We came to the gym early and watched film from (Tuesday’s) match,” RAL coach Whitney Nailon said. “We were completely dialed in tonight and the scores and stats reflect that.”
Macy Graichen led the Jills with seven kills, seven digs and an ace. Jillian Woodruff added six kills, eight assists and four digs in the win.
R.A. Long also saw key contributions from Lyla Khlee, who tallied three kills, two aces and 11 digs, and Eve Huhta, who notched three assists and a dozen digs.
The defensive tone was set by Evelyn Ofstun who posted six kills and six blocks at the net. Rachel Yeam added three blocks and three kills, while Rowan Ward and Mikayla Sorenson finished with 7 and 8 digs, respectively.
“As a coach, I was hoping to see this response from our team,” Nailon added. “Every part of our game was on and it feels good going into a league match tomorrow.”
The Lumberjills (4-5, 2-5 league) will host Ridgefield at 7 p.m., Thursday, at The Lumberdome. R.A. Long will then host the Lumberjill Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
Clatskanie clobbers Bible schools
The Tigers kept up their winning way, Wednesday, with a three set win over Faith Bible/Life Christian in a 2A Northwest League volleyball contest. The hosts from Clatskanie won by scores of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-14.
Addy Compton posted 21 assists with a twin pair of kills and aces in the win, while Natalie Baker added eight kills with nine aces.
Joey Sizemore pitched in for Clatskanie with eight kills and two aces, while Lacey Willis posted seven digs, four kills and five aces. Olivia George added four kills and a block for the Tigers.
Clatskanie (13-2, 7-1 league) will play at Nestucca on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
