Kelso’s Gallagher glides against Vancouver schools
The Kelso boys swimming team was able to hold its own against the Evergreen School District teams last week thanks in no small part to Owen Gallagher. The high-speed Hilander won a pair of events and pulled his weight in the relay events to help Kelso find its webbed-footing in the pool before the winter break..
The Hilanders defeated Heritage (112-6), Evergreen (112-4), and Mountain View (92-43, but lost to Union 88-66.
Gallagher won the 200-yard freestyle race with a season-best time of 1:59.28, which was nearly seven seconds over Redi Shepard from Union. And Gallagher touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:58.00. That time was more than 20 seconds faster than runner-up Austin Nguyn of Mt. View, while Kelso’s Spencer Brown finished in third.
Gallagher also swam the anchor leg for the Hilanders in the 200-yard freestyle to help place second. Jude Beck, Wyatt Straw and Will Cheslock all joined in to help post a time of 1:51.29, which was nine seconds behind the winners from Union.
That wasn’t the best performance by a Kelso relay team on the day, though. That distinction belonged to Brown, Aiden Fias, Cheslock and Straw, who won the 200-yard medley. That team of speedy Scots finished in with a time of 2:07.99 to beat Union’s group by seven seconds.
The Hilanders also saw several other impressive individual performances.
In the 50-yard freestyle Straw placed second with a time of 26.93, while Cheslock placed third( 28.42). Straw also posted a new-District qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:52.00.
Beck posted a new District-qualifying time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:23.66, and Fias punched his postseason ticket in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:22.87.

R.A. Long breaks down before the break
The Lumberjills went into winter break in neutral late last week with a Hallmark Holiday special of a trip to Lakewood to face off with Steilacoom, Thursday.
“We had bus trouble and showed up an hour late,” R.A. Long coach Shane Berridge said.
The non-league match was set to be the third in three days for the Jills. But instead of stressing about putting the final tinsel on the tree, they just rolled with the punches and let everyone go home happy.
“We ended up just doing some three-girl games and some bakers, nothing was kept record wise since it was non-league,” Berridge explained.
R.A. Long will be back in action on Jan. 7 at Triangle Lanes for the season’s third Civil War clash with Mark Morris. To see how things went the last time the Jills and Monarchs battled for bragging rights at Longview’s only remaining bowling alley, click here.
