NWAC Women’s Soccer: LCC sinks South Puget Sound with another clean sheet
If you’re looking for mercy on the pitch, don’t expect to get it from the Red Devils.
Over the weekend the Lower Columbia College women’s soccer team improved their perfect start to the season with a 7-0 win over South Puget Sound at The Northlake Field.
The victory over the Clippers on Saturday improved LCC’s record to 6-0 on the season while maintaining its season-long clean sheet. Thus far, the Red Devils have outscored their foes 33-0 on the season.
Alexia Valdez and Shakira Nolasco led LCC with two goals each, while Rhyli Grim turned in a goal and an assist in the win.
The Red Devils scored twice in the first two minutes and foreshadowed what was to come. Valdez notched the first score on an assist from Brynlee Grant, and then Grim capitalized on a penalty kick moments later.
Soon thereafter Shakira Nolasco found the back of the net twice in a row, with an unassisted goal in the 7th minute and another score off an assist from Valdez in the 11th minute to give the hosts a 4-0 lead at the half.
Maddie Kohout extended the lead with an unassisted goal in the 51st minute, and Karie Pate followed up in the 67th minute with a goal off an assist from Avery Ness. Zoie Clay finished up the Red Devils’ scoring showcase in the 78th minute with an assist from Sydney Lulay.
Freshman goalie Emma Beavin kept the season’s shutout intact with two saves in the win.
Lower Columbia (6-0, 4-0 league) will host Centralia at high noon, Saturday, at The Northlake Field.
NWAC Volleyball: Red Devils continue early season struggles in loss to Centralia
The Red Devils suffered another misstep in their league-opener, Friday, with a four-set loss to Centralia College at Myklebust Gymnasium. The Trail Blazers took the match by scores of 27-25, 25-19, 14-25 and 25-17.
The loss dropped Lower Columbia College to 4-11 under first-year coach Troy Shorey.
And yet, there were positives against Centralia, even in defeat. Samantha Farland and Kenny Collins posted 15 kills each, while Allison Orantes dished out 18 assists and Charissa Schierman added 14 helpers for the Red Devils. And Madi Noel turned in a team-high 20 digs, with Collins adding 15 to match her kill total.
Meanwhile, Centralia was led by Paige Miller who turned in 19 kills, 13 digs, three aces and one block. Analiese Martin added 13 kills, Lawren Pao tallied 21 digs and Avery Starr handed out 43 assists for the Blazers.
So far this season Collins and Farland have been the big hitters on offense for the Red Devils with 182 and 176 kills, respectively. Similarly, Orantes and Schierman have shared the distribution duties with 234 and 201 assists, respectively.
All of the above Red Devils have had their fair share of moments on the defensive side, too, but Collins stands out above the crowd with 206 digs and 12 blocks. Noel leads LCC in digs with 289, and Layni Brandhorst has had the most highlights at the net with a team-high 25 blocks.
Lower Columbia (4-11, 0-1) is set to host Highline College at 6 p.m., Wednesday, at Myklebust Gymnasium. The Red Devils will head to Green River on Friday.
