This Day In History
Sept. 26, 1975: A week after having his game-tying extra point blocked against Fort Vancouver, Kelso’ Jerry King gave the Hilanders an overtime win, booting a 25-yard field goal in the extra period to give his side a 10-7 win over Battle Ground. The Tigers began the OT period with the ball, but couldn’t go anywhere with it and saw their own kick go wide, giving the Hilanders the golden chance to win. The two teams combined for just 73 yards in a scoreless first half, and traded 1-yard touchdowns in the second.
“Do I like overtimes? No, not really,” Kelso coach Ed Laulainen said. “Except when you win them.”
Editor’s Note: Coach Laulainen died last week at the age of 88. The Hilanders will honor their legendary coach at halftime of Friday’s home football game against Bremerton. The Laulainen family will later serve as honorary captains for a home game on Oct. 3. A full memorial service will be held at the Kelso High School Gymnasium on Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
