This Day In History
Mar. 6, 1992: Trailing by a point with a minute to play, the Naselle boys basketball team rips off a 7-0 run to overcome Wilbur-Creston 57-51 and punch its ticket to the State B title game in Spokane. Brett Kimbal sparked the run with a steal, feeding Craig Smith, who made a layup through contact for a three-point play to put the Comets in front. Ryan Erickson stole the next inbounds pass and took it to the rack to make it a four-point game, and Steve Mattson came away with a steal on the next Wildcat possession, leading to two more Erickson free throws. Mattson finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds, and Smith had 17 points.
Mar. 6, 2008: The R.A. Long boys basketball team goes the distance for a 79-70 win over Prosser in overtime in a loser-out contest at the 2A state tournament, giving the Jacks their first state win since 1956.
“If we’re gonna make history, we might as well do it in overtime,” said RAL senior Marcus Irwin, who scored nine of his 16 points in the extra period. Tanner Bradley led the Lumberjacks with 21 points, Edwin Frauenfeld added 14, and Scott Pisapia had 12.
