This Day In History
April 20, 1973: The Mark Morris baseball team needs an extra frame to get the job done but does so, beating R.A. Long 3-1 in eight. MM’s Tom Chamberlain and RAL’s Jerry Dickinson traded zeroes on the hill for six innings, before the Monarchs finally scratched across a run in the top of the seventh on a Cole Wade double and a Mickey Brusco single. The Jacks came back to tie things in the bottom half of the inning when Jim Carvey scored on a fielder’s choice. In the eighth, MM loaded the bases for Chamberlain, who helped his own cause with a go-ahead sac fly, before Wade added another run with a squeeze.
That Day In History
April 19, 2006: Robby Sanders tosses the first four frames and Brandon Walker handles the last three in a combined no-hitter, as Kalama takes down Rainier (Wash.) 7-1 in a Southwest Washington 1A League matchup. Sanders struck out six, while Walker punched out a pair. Chase Harkleroad and Mike LaRoy both went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Chris Pierce swiped three bases, and coach Dave Orzel got tossed in the sixth inning for arguing a non-call on what he thought was a balk.
“I didn’t even freak out,” Orzel said. “I didn’t get fired up or say anything. … It was not your typical Orzel ejection.”
