This Day In History
April 18, 1973: Rainier and Mark Morris open up their first — and possibly only — high school bicycle racing season against each other, with the Columbians coming away with the dual meet victory. Thirteen cyclists covered a winding 30-mile course that rode up along Coal Creek nearly to Castle Rock, with each team counting their top five finishers like in cross country. After over two hours of pedaling, the race came down to less than a wheel, with Mark Morris’ Pat Briney taking first place in 2:06.42 — just four-hundreths of a second ahead of Rainier’s Mike Gorthy.

Castle Rock vs Warrenton
— Ron Graham Field, 1 p.m.
Rocket Man: Putting a Name on It
The Castle Rock baseball team will holding a dedication ceremony on Saturday in order to name their home field in honor of former head coach Ron Graham.
Graham was a teacher and coach at The Rock from 1969 to 1997. When he took over as skipper for the Rockets the team still played its games behind the middle school, but with help from the community Graham spearheaded the effort to build the double-diamond complex currently utilized at the high school.
Over his 27 year career Graham put together an overall record of 361-252 (with five ties in the mix). In 1988 he led the Rockets to their first and only State title on the baseball diamond. Graham also led The Rock to a runner-up finish at State, along with a fourth-place finish and 15 playoff appearances.
Graham also helped to coach football at Castle Rock, including a three-year stint as head coach. And after retiring he spent several years as an official for football and basketball games. He was inducted in the Washington State Coaches Hall of Fame in 1994.
During his career, Ron had the support of his wife, Tami, and their daughter, Marnie.
The dedication ceremony will begin on the varsity field at 12:45 p.m. A postgame social reception will be held at the Castle Rock Axe House and Event Center from 3-6 p.m.
