This Day In History
Nov. 23, 1979: Mark Morris quarterback Sam Tilton only throws the ball four times on a 25-degree day at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima, but three of his passes go for touchdowns to lead the Monarchs to a 34-21 win over Pullman in the 2A state semifinals, sending MM to its only state championship appearance in program history. With the Greyhounds loading up to stop star tailback Alan Peterson, Tilton took the lid off the defense with a 51-yard scoring strike to Rob Poole on the second play of the game, and added touchdown passes to Kevin Bogner and Ted Campbell.
“The receivers were open and my hands were warm,” Tilton said.
Peterson made his mark in the second half, taking the kickoff to begin the third quarter back 80 yards for a touchdown, and added a 12-yard rushing touchdown.
