This Day In History
Nov. 6, 1971: Toledo pulls off an upset in a Battle of the Cowlitz that has significant league and state implications, downing 1A No. 1 Winlock 12-8 to take the South Central League title. Larry Benfield scored Toledo’s first touchdown on a 32-yard run in the first quarter, and caught it second on a 15-yard pass from Denny Wallace in the second. Winlock’s Mike Barnett linked up with Vance Titus to get the Cardinals on the board in the third quarter — and the two combined for the two-point conversion as well — but that would be all the Toledo defense would surrender.
