This Day In History
Dec. 3, 1988: Castle Rock claims its first state championship in football in school history in upset fashion, downing Ephrata — led by former Rocket coach Bill Betcher — 23-20 in the Class A state title game at the Kingdome. The result snapped a 38-game winning streak for the Tigers, who came into the game as two-time defending champions.
Steve Robins, Kevin Johnson, and Jon Butler all scored a touchdown each for the Rockets, who led 21-14 after three quarters of play. Ephrata got into the end zone with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter and went for the go-ahead two-point conversion, but Dwayne Collington got heavy pressure on the quarterback to force an incompletion and keep Castle Rock in front. The Rockets added two more points on a safety.
“They’re small bodies with big hearts,” said CR coach Tom Bate, who played for Betcher as a high schooler. “They’re outstanding competitors.”
