KELSO — The season long script of what for the Kelso boys basketball team played out once again on the big K-Court, Tuesday. The Hilanders showed the glimpses of what their young core can accomplish when playing at their best, but also suffered the inconsistency that goes hand-in-hand with a younger team and a rotation constantly in flux.

The familiar story ended in a 55-42 loss to Mountain View in 3A Greater St. Helens League play, leaving the Scots encouraged by what they saw and frustrated by what they didn’t.

Against the first-place Thunder, the Scotties took a few minutes to get going at all and fell behind 8-2 after the first three minutes,. But what followed over the final five minutes of the quarter is what keeps us media types talking about the optimistic long-term outlook for these Hilanders.

Kelso went on to close the quarter on a 16-2 run behind stingy defense and a balanced scoring attack that included six different players filling the cup, led by five points each from Parker Stewart and Anthony Robinson off the bench.

The Hilanders had worked up an 18-8 advantage after one quarter and had the home fans excited for what might be in store in the appetizer affair of a boys/girls basketball doubleheader. As it turned out, the first bite was the best bite of the night.

“I thought we probably played the best quarter of the season in that first quarter,” Kelso coach Joe Kinch said. “Then it was immediately followed by the polar opposite of that in the second, though.”
