2A Prep Football / League Merger

With the official opening of preseason high school football camp this week additional details have been revealed regarding a controversial merger between the 2A Greater St. Helens League and the 2A Evergreen Conference for the 2026 and 2027 seasons..

The temporary merger proposal was first announced and reported by BZM in January and applies only to football. The changes were put in motion after Centralia High School opted out of the 2A EvCo schedule in order to play an independent campaign as a guest member of the 1A Evergreen League beginning this fall.

The league merger was initially voted down by the 2A Greater St. Helens League, but the District IV governing body had the final say and voted to push the merger through. In the seven months since that decision prep football fans were left to wonder what the new-look league would actually look like — including which teams would play each other and how playoff berths would be decided.

So, of course, on the first day of WIAA sanctioned football practice, the details were finally made public — with several big questions still looming. Those details arrived in a press release from the members of 2A District IV sent out Wednesday by Washougal athletic director Brian Wilde.
