This Day In History
Mar. 13, 2019: Wahkiakum’s Beau Carlson, just six months removed from suffering a life-threatening head injury in a football game, hits a home run in his first at-bat back in the Mules’ 10-0 win over Ilwaco. Carlson, who suffered a subdural hematoma with midline shift after a hit in Wahkiakum’s Sept. 7, 2018 game against Adna, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, and ended up undergoing three surgeries and spending over a month in the hospital.
“You can just lay there and give up, or you can just keep fighting,” Carlson told reporters ahead of his return to sports. “And I knew I wanted to play baseball.”
Carlson’s first-inning home run was a two-run shot, scoring his brother, Brody. He ended up going 2-for-3 on the day with a stolen base.
Editor’s Note: The feature on Carlson was the cover story for the final newspaper ever printed in house at The Daily News.
