That Day In History

• Jan. 18, 1966: A trip to the other side of the big river can’t slow the Toutle Lake boys basketball team down, as the Ducks take their 10th straight win to open the season with a 58-50 win at Rainier. Al Huffman led the winners with 16 points, while Bob Jessen added 12.

• Jan. 19, 1996: The Kelso boys basketball team finds itself in a 10-point hole early in the third quarter but rips off a 17-1 run en route to a 61-56 victory at Prairie in Greater St. Helens Conference action.
  Shane Maher did the bulk of the damage for the Hilanders, hitting four 3-pointers in the first half and going 12-for-12 at the free-throw line for a 29-point performance.
  “Shane had a tremendous all-around game,” Kelso coach Robert Blackman said.
  Chad Zandi pitched in 12 points and five assists. As a team, the Hilanders hit just three shots from inside the arc all night long, but hit nine 3-pointers and went 28-for-40 on free throws.
