That Day In History
May 3, 1983: The Clatskanie baseball team takes a pair of pitchers’ duels from Rainier, with Corey Blecha and Pudge Davis both tossing shutouts to lead the Tigers to 2-0 and 5-0 wins over the Columbians in a Highway 30 Hootenanny doubleheader. Blecha allowed three hits and struck out four opposite Rainier’s Donnie Holmes, who K’d five but allowed single runs in the fourth and the sixth. In the nightcap, Davis didn’t log a single strikeout but only allowed six baserunners. Clatskanie scored its first run on a hit batter, two passed balls, and an error, then blew things open with a four-run seventh, capped by a Bob Donaldson two-run triple.
This Day In History
May 4, 1989: With a doubleheader against first-place Quinault the next day, Naselle baseball coach Kevin Heimbigner keeps his pitchers on short leashes and lets his younger players play, and the Comets put together a 4-1 victory over Pe Ell. T.J. Katyryniuk, Brent Strange, and Tim Wirkkala combined for the win on the hill totalling eight strikeouts and not walking anyone. Strange led the way at the plate with three hits and two RBIs.
“They worked hard, and I was very happy with the kids being able to get in and pitch the way they did,” Heimbigner said.
