This Day In History
Mar. 14, 1983: R.A. Long’s Bryan Shaw lets his play on the course make up for a mental miscue to save the Lumberjacks a result in their three-way St. Helen’s Conference boys golf meet-up with Chehalis and Battle Ground at Mint Valley. The Jacks finished behind the Bearcats but four shots ahead of the Tigers, but Shaw added up his scorecard wrong — adding four shots to his score, signing his card, and accidentally forcing RAL into a tiebreaking playoff.
“And they say math isn’t important,” RAL coach Art Hoover said.
Shaw made up for the mistake when it mattered, though, beating Battle Ground’s Mike Hill by a stroke in the playoff to clinch the spot the Jacks had been meant to have.
