This Day In History

• Dec. 18, 1976: The Ilwaco boys basketball team shuts out Forks in the third overtime period played in Clallam County, taking a 60-57 win on a Roy Oman jump shot and a Jay Kaino free throw. The Fishermen trailed by 12 points at halftime but came back to lead by six with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, before letting the Spartans tie things back up. Oman finished with 19 points, while Bob DeCamp and Brian Aase both had 12.

  That marathon came directly after the JV game, which started late when the referees were delayed, went to double overtime. On the drive back south, the team bus came upon an accident and stayed to help until emergency crews showed up. The Fishermen — who had started the trip north at 11 a.m. for an 8 p.m. varsity game — finally got back to Ilwaco at 6:30 a.m. Sunday.
