That Day In History
Dec. 26, 1986: The adult in the room nearly costs the Mark Morris girls basketball team the game, but Amy Piper saves coach Bob Bagaason’s bacon with a go-ahead jumper with seven seconds left to give the Monarchs a 63-62 win over Ridgefield. MM led 61-60 with just over a minute left when Bagaason went a bit too far with the referee and was whistled for a technical foul; the Spudders drilled the ensuing free throws to go ahead 62-61.
“I thought it was all over because of that,” Bagaason said. “But the girls spited me and were able to pull it out of the fire.”Piper finished with 18 points to lead the Monarchs, while Sheri Noah scored 11 and Carol Smith and Michelle Hayes both added 10.
