This Day In History
May 25, 1984: Kelso’s Joe Martin goes from eighth place to first in the final lap to win the 2A State title 1,600 meters in 4:15.9, becoming the Hilanders’ first ever individual state champion. Kelso’s 400-meter relay team of Tom Napier, Greg Mitchell, Scott Radcliffe and Dean Kenaston — which came in with the sixth-best time in the state — also won a title, setting the tone for the Hilanders to seal the team title the next day.
R.A. Long’s Chris Nolden also came away a winner in Tacoma, taking the title in the 400.
Out in Wenatchee, Toledo’s Scott Bickar only qualified for the finals in the shot put by an inch, but turned around to win the whole thing in the 1A finals.
Castle Rock, the 1983 team champions, is disqualified from the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 400-meter relay, just about ending its hopes to repeat.
