This Day In History
April 11, 2000: Chad Olsen brings Seth Johnson home with a perfect safety squeeze to cap a three-run fifth inning, and the Kelso baseball team holds on to beat Evergreen 5-4 in Greater St. Helens 4A League play.
“That’s exactly what we need with a smart, savvy runner,” Kelso coach Gunnar Guttormsen said. “[Johnson] did a good job there. When he’s healthy, he’s our No. 1 speed guy.”
Cisco Gonzalez led off the big frame with a single before Johnson — who also hit a two-run home run in the first inning — drove him home. Nate Cundiff also hit an RBI double in the inning. With the score on their side, the Hilanders gave the ball to Paul Richie, and the reliever tossed two innings of one-hit ball to secure the win.
