This Day In History
Nov. 29, 1996: Toledo allows nearly twice as many yards as it gains against Meridian at the Tacoma Dome in the 1A state semifinals, but comes out ahead 20-19 to advance to its first state title game in program history. The Trojans held John Sanford’s side to just 93 total yards in the first three quarters, but after getting the ball back down 19-14, Toledo chugs its way 73 yards, getting to the 1-yard line with 1:30 left before promptly getting stuffed for three straight plays. On fourth down, though, Kyle Wallace took a pitch and got the final 36 inches, getting over the goal line to put Toledo ahead.
“When we got in the huddle at the start of that last drive, we knew it was do or die,” Wallace said. “We’ve been playing together since sixth grade. We knew we were going to come out here and make a statement today. We sucked it up and got it done.”
Prior to that, Toledo’s entire offense had been on two plays. In the first quarter, Kris Davidson connected with Thad Lingenfelder for a 50-yard halfback pass that Sanford described as “not pretty, but it worked” to go ahead 7-0. After Meridian — which gained 359 yards to Toledo’s 167 — responded with a touchdown to get on the board, Lingenfelder took the ensuing kickoff to the house.
