May 22, 1996: The biggest game of the season for the R.A. Long and Castle Rock softball teams takes 72 to hours to complete, but the Lumberjills come out 2-0 winners in eight innings in a loser-out, winner-to-State game at the district tournament behind a dominant outing in the circle from Misty Velke. The game began on Monday but was postponed for rain after two innings, and was resumed on Wednesday. Velke and CR’s Dessa Carroll traded seven scoreless innings, before RAL plated the only two runs of the game on an error and a Courtney Giles RBI double. Velke struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to finish with 15 punchouts.
In Thurston County, Toledo beat Centralia 2-0 in the other loser-out, winner-to-State game, in a matchup that was originally scheduled to begin Saturday, actually began Monday at 7th Avenue Park. and ended Wednesday at North Thurston High School.
