This Day In History
Jan. 8, 1985: Lyle Patterson earns his 400th win on the hardwood as Naselle’s boys basketball coach with a 70-67 nailbiter over Ilwaco.
“It’s a milestone, but no big deal really,” said Patterson, who finished his career with 623 wins in 32 seasons with the Comets.
The win was Naselle’s revenge for an earlier loss to Ilwaco, the Fishermens’ first over the Comets in eight years. Both sides were led by Wirkkala’s; Chris Wirkkala scored a game-high 29 points for Naselle, while his distant cousin Gary Wirkkala dropped 21 for Ilwaco.
