This Day In History
Oct. 7, 1994: R.A. Long pulls off a 21-14 win over Camas in what coach Chris Fritsch can only describe as “one of the oddest football games I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience.” The Jacks led 14-0 after a strong first half, but blew the lead and would have trailed if the Papermakers hadn’t missed a 35-yard field goal with 1:10 remaining. R.A. Long went three-and-out and punted it back to its hosts, who needed just one play to get to midfield. On the next snap, though, Derrick Paul tipped a Camas pass up and Daniel Langford came down with it, sprinting to the end zone for a pick-six with two seconds left.
R.A. Long tried an onside kick to burn the rest of the clock but kicked it straight out of bounds, giving the Papermakers one last play at the Lumberjack 40-yard line. Camas’ Bryan Alwert caught the Hail Mary pass at the 8-yard line and dragged RAL’s Matt Fisher and Brian Rutherford 7 more yards, but the duo finally forced him to the ground, just short of the end zone.“The last seven minutes was, no kidding, the most unusual seven minutes of high school football. But we were able to win, and that’s the main thing.”
— Chris Fritsch, R.A. Long Head Coach 1994
