This Day In History
Dec. 17, 1982 — The Kelso boys basketball team doesn’t take its first lead of the night until the final two minutes, but gets a pair of clutch buckets from Darren Spjut and Jack Haldorson down the stretch to squeak out a 60-57 non-league win over Astoria (Ore.).
“When you’re behind, you’ve got to play tough defense,” Kelso coach Wayne Lovingfoss said. “We finally played Kelso basketball. We went out there and fought and scrapped.”
Monte Chellis* led the Hilanders — who trailed by 14 late in the third quarter — with 22 points, while Spjut added 15.
*Chellis was a five-year Hilander after being granted an extra season of competition due to a tough case of mononucleosis.
