This Day In History
Sept. 8, 2000: James Bolen scores his third touchdown of the night with a 56-yard run early in the third quarter, then helps lead Woodland’s defense to pitch a second-half shutout in a 22-20 comeback win. Bolen finished with 160 yards on the ground, but his biggest play of the night came on defense, coming up with a touchdown-saving tackle at the 10-yard line in the final minute. The Thurston County Beavers went on to both a game-winning field goal at the buzzer, giving Woodland a win to open the new millennium.
That Day In History
Sept. 7, 2007: The Mark Morris football team stonewalls Kelso 9-0, ending a 21-year losing streak to the Hilanders in front of 6,000 fans at Longview Memorial Stadium. T.J. Suek put the Monarchs on the board with a field goal at the stroke of halftime, then helped ice it with a 4-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The rest was a defensive masterpiece. MM held Kelso to 166 total yards on the night and stuffed the Hilanders on fourth-and-4 from the 10 early in the fourth quarter on their only drive to reach the red zone.
Sept. 7, 1973: Herschall Blaylock tallies over half of Rainier’s points by himself, powering the Columbians to an 18-12 win over Philomath. Blaylock started the scoring by sacking Philomath’s quarterback in the end zone for a safety, added a two-point conversion after Dan Coffman’s 8-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and sealed the win with a 30-yard scoring scamper of his own. He finished with 168 rushing yards to go along with seven tackles on defense.
