This Day In History
May 18, 2004: Kelso alum Jason Schmidt pitches one of the best games of his MLB career, striking out 13 — matching his career high to that point — and allowing just one hit and one walk in nine innings to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 1-0 win over the Cubs at Wrigley field. Schmidt gave up a two-out infield single to Todd Walker in the bottom of the fifth, then retired the final 13 Chicago batters of the game. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
May 18, 1980: After many weeks of making a seismic fuss and drawing international attention to Southwest Washington our local volcano finally blew its top. The eruption of Mt. St. Helens ripped a massive scar across the region we now lovingly refer to as The Blast Zone.
