This Day In History
Nov. 10, 1984: R.A. Long drops a set but rolls to a 2A district title, downing Capital 11-15, 15-3, 15-3 after dropping Tumwater 17-15, 15-3 in the semifinals. Donna Smith tallied 40 assists between the two matches to lead the Lumberjills, while Suzanne Barnes had 22 kills.
Meanwhile in Tumwater, Kelso — the fourth seed out of the St. Helens Conference — turned out to be the shock of the tournament, starting their district tournamenet with an upset of northern champ Olympia before bouncing back from a loss to Capital by beating Prairie 15-6, 15-7 to earn a spot in the state tournament.
“It’s got to be the Cinderella team of the year,” Kelso coach Craig Soleim said. “... Nobody expected us to do anything in the league, let alone go to District and beat the No. 1 team in the north Friday.”
