This Day in History
May 25, 1984: Kelso’s Joe Martin goes from eighth place to first in the final lap to win the 2A State title 1,600 meters in 4:15.9, becoming the Hilanders’ first ever individual state champion. Kelso’s 400-meter relay team of Tom Napier, Greg Mitchell, Scott Radcliffe and Dean Kenaston — which came in with the sixth-best time in the state — also won a title, setting the tone for the Hilanders to seal the team title the next day. R.A. Long’s Chris Nolden also came away a winner in Tacoma, taking the title in the 400-meter. Out in Wenatchee, Toledo’s Scott Bickar only qualified for the finals in the shot put by an inch, but turned around to win the whole thing.
