This Day In History
Oct. 16, 1987: Castle Rock’s defense is so solid in its 7-0 win over Woodland that, despite only leading by one possession and the Beavers driving, CR coach Tom Bate takes off his headset with three minutes left on the clock. Woodland ended up getting the ball into the red zone, but the Rockets sacked quarterback Mike McPherson with time winding down and held firm for one last play to end it. The Rocket defense, fittingly, had done the scoring as well; Jerry Johnson picked off McPherson and returned it 40 yards to the house — then kicked the extra point as well — to provide all of the night’s points.
