This Day In History
Mar. 4, 2005: The Mark Morris boys basketball team goes ahead early and never loses control in a 56-44 win over Seattle powerhouse Rainier Beach in the 3A state semifinals in Tacoma.
“I’m sure all our fans were pulling for us,” MM forward Chris Hutton said. “But I don’t know if they honestly thought we could do this.”
Terrence Williams, Beach’s Louisville-bound star, scored the first seven points of the game, but from there it was all Monarchs, who took the lead on a Kevin Wright jumper four minutes in and never surrendered it again. Hutton led MM with 18 points and Josh Wilson finished with 14, and the Monarchs made it to their first State title game under Bill Bakamus.
That Day In History
Mar. 3, 2001: The Woodland boys basketball team rudely interrupts Elma’s dreams of a four-peat at the 2A district tournament, downing the Eagles 62-50 in the district title game at St. Martin’s Pavilion. Nathan Drake led the Beavers — who earned their first District championship since 1985 — with 19 points, and Eric Sigfridson had 15.
